TWYFELFONTEIN - directly translated to ”fountain of doubt”
- south of Khorixas - has one of the most extensive accumulations of pre-historic rock paintings in Namibia. Predominantly portrayed
are lion, giraffe and elephant. Although the exact age of the drawings is unknown, it is estimated that they are between a few hundred and several thousand years old.
Twyfelfontein is not only a magical setting, with vast slabs of red sandstone as the canvas, but is also one of the most comprehensive collections of engravings of this kind anywhere.
Unfortunately, Rock Art is very fragile and vulnerable, and can decay and disappear very easily. Even a moderate measure of climatic variations and environmental modifications can destroy the psychic activity transferred onto rock faces during the last 30 000 years. Of course, these natural causes, which usually proceed very slowly, are aggravated by man’s behaviour, be it deliberate or not. Tourism implies more or less knowledgeable vandalism because the average tourist has not been specifically educated to respect the historical heritage of the places he visits, and often tour guides or site personnel, if any, exercise slack surveillance. Furthermore there are frequent attempts to remove carvings and paintings as souvenirs, or for sale on the unofficial antiques market. To preserve this heritage we must start off from the assumption that it is our moral and ethical duty to transmit the cultural heritage of the past to future generations, conserving it and enriching it so as to enable our children to understand the basis on which the civilisation of the Third Millennium is built. By revealing the past we can make it a focus of education: only through knowledge can we attain the understanding of universal values and therefore the understanding and respect for the different cultures of all times, of all ethnic groups, of the natural inborn dignity of every man, which must be able to transmit and elaborate his culture for each new generation.
